The
Internal Revenue Service has announced an increase in the optional standard
mileage rates for the final six months of 2011. Employers may use the optional
reimbursement rates to calculate the deductible costs of operating an automobile
for business and other purposes. The modification results from recent increases
in the price of fuel.

The U.S.
Department of Labor has filed a lawsuit against the Texas Department of Family
and Protective Services' Child Protective Services (CPS) in Austin for failing
to pay 800 current and former investigators and case workers overtime

PROPOSED CHANGES TO THE HIPAA PRIVACY RULE
The U.S.
Department of Health and Human Services’ (HHS) has announced a proposed rule
that would give people the right to get a report on who has electronically
accessed their protected health information. The Notice of Proposed Rulemaking
concerning the accounting of disclosures requirement under the Health Insurance
Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Privacy Rule, is available for public

NLRB PROPOSES RULES TO SIMPLIFY UNION ELECTIONS
The
National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has proposed sweeping changes to its
existing rules and regulations governing procedures in union representation
cases. Published in the Federal Register on June 22, 2011, the Notice of
Proposed Rulemaking is intended to reduce unnecessary litigation, streamline
pre- and post-election procedures, and facilitate the use of electronic

OSHA
RULE AIMS TO REDUCE EMPLOYER BURDENS
The
Occupational Safety and Health Administration recently announced the upcoming
release of a final rule that streamlines and simplifies standards while reducing
employer burdens. The rule, which soon will be published in the Federal
Register, will update OSHA standards and better enable employers to comply with

Facebook
continues to grow as a social media outlet and sounding board for employees. Two
more Facebook firing cases, both of which involve disparaging remarks posted by
employees, have once again captured the attention of the National Labors
Relations Board (NLRB).

SUPREME
COURT RULES IN FAVOR OF WAL-MART
For over
a decade, Wal-Mart has battled against claims that it discriminated against
female employees who sought to certify a class action against the retail giant.
In a victory for the company, the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that 1.5 million
women who worked at Wal-Mart did not have enough in common to constitute a class
in a class-action suit.

OSHA FINES EXCEED $1.2
MILLION FOR ASBESTOS HAZARDS
The
Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has issued penalties of
$1,247,400 to AMD Industries Inc. after five unprotected and untrained workers
allegedly were required to conduct asbestos removal exposing them to this
cancer-causing material.
